Overview

Magello combines easy-to-read, ultra-high-resolution (~100 m resolution), high-fidelity atmospheric and oceanic forecasts and datasets (e.g. precipitation, air and water temperatures, currents, wind, salinity, sea state, and more) on a user-friendly Google Earthtm platform. Magello also integrates plume forecasts in the event of spills or contaminants in the rivers, ocean and air.

 MAGELLO WAS CONCEIVED AND DEVELOPED BY A TEAM OF STUDENTS IN THE MSC 2011 SUMMER RESEARCH INSTITUTE, AND WAS SELECTED AS A TOP TEN FINALIST IN THE 2012 NATIONAL SECURITY INNOVATION COMPETITION. IT IS CURRENTLY UNDERGOING FURTHER IMPROVEMENTS TO ADDRESS STAKEHOLDER INTERESTS AND NEEDS INCLUDING THOSE OF THE U.S. COAST GUARD RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT CENTER.

Accessible on a computer or smartphone, Magello can be used by emergency responders virtually anywhere to rapidly access vital information necessary to make quick, informed decisions. The ability to view several different environmental overlays simultaneously makes Magello a highly-customizable tool with a variety of security and emergency response applications. For example, viewing real-time wind, ocean currents, and sea surface temperature overlays could provide valuable information to the U.S. Coast Guard performing tracking and cleanup of an oil spill or complementary information in support of maritime search and rescue planning. In the event of a port disruption, the U.S. Coast Guard could use the Automatic Identification System (AIS) overlay as a situational awareness tool to see which commercial vessels are in the vicinity.
