The Beyond the Basics website provides guidance to states and local communities to develop and update hazard mitigation plans, a federal requirement for receiving disaster assistance funds. The free, interactive website allows communities to access a suite of pioneering planning tools, which are based on the Federal Emergency Management Agency's (FEMA) Local Mitigation Planning Handbook.
FEMA, THE NATIONAL HAZARD MITIGATION ASSOCIATION, AND SEVERAL LOCAL COMMUNITIES HAVE TAPPED INTO THE BEYOND THE BASICS WEBSITE TO ACCESS ITS UNIQUE SUITE OF TOOLS. THE AMERICAN PLANNING ASSOCIATION'S HAZARD MITIGATION AND DISASTER RECOVERY INTEREST GROUP HAS POSTED RESEARCH REPORTS FROM BEYOND THE BASICS ON THEIR WEBSITE AND ENCOURAGES PROFESSIONAL LAND USE PLANNERS TO USE THE INFORMATION WHEN DEVELOPING HAZARD MITIGATION PLANS.
The Beyond the Basics website guides planners through a series of modules to develop a hazard mitigation plan. The website also provides planning process worksheets, sample plans, opportunity to submit new best practices, and practical approaches and examples of how communities can increase resilience to natural disasters.
