University Programs will be sponsoring the following events: 

October 7-8, 2009: The Awareness & Localization of Explosives-Related Threats (ALERT) Center of Excellence at Northeastern University will sponsor an Advanced Algorithm Workshop with invitations to selected industry and academic experts to identify potential concepts and technologies for future basic research investments.

 

October 8-9, 2009: The Center of Excellence for explosives research and education at the University of Rhode Island will sponsor an Explosives Detection Workshop with invitations to selected industry and academic experts to identify potential concepts and technologies for future basic research investments.

 

October 19-20, 2009: Tsunami Research Colloquium will be held as a series of natural hazards workshops sponsored by the Office of University Programs and the Infrastructure and Geophysical Division.  The workshops are hosted by the Natural Disasters, Coastal Infrastructure and Emergency Management (NDCIEM) Center of Excellence at the University of North Carolina’s (UNC) in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. A working group will examine the current state of tsunami research and identify knowledge gaps in the areas of tsunami generation mechanisms, tsunami evolution in ocean and continental shelf, coastal effects, hazard mitigation and emergency responses.

 

October 19, 2009 and October 26, 2009: United States Coast Guard (USCG) Vice Admiral Robert J. Papp and Arif Alikhan, DHS Assistant Secretary for Policy Development, will respectively visit the Center for Risk & Economic Analysis of Terrorism (CREATE) Center of Excellence at University of Southern California.

 

October 27-28, 2009: The ALERT COE at Northeastern University will co-sponsor the Research & Industrial Collaboration Conference led by The Bernard M. Gordon Center for Subsurface Sensing & Imaging Systems (Gordon-CenSSIS), a National Science Foundation Engineering Research Center.

 

October 30, 2009: The Office of University Programs will hold the Bi-Annual Centers of Excellence (COE) Director’s Meeting at the Capitol Hilton in Washington, D.C. This event is in conjunction with the Career Pathways Workshop that is scheduled for October 31to November 1.

 

October 31 - Nov 1, 2009: Office of University Programs will be holding its Annual Career Pathways Conference at the Capitol Hilton in Washington, D.C.  Plenary sessions include: High Priority Research Areas, Research Projects in S&T, Homeland Security – Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (HS-STEM) Pipeline. Participants include Centers of Excellence Directors and students supported by S&T Office of University Programs.
